Favorite Scripture?
This week we will highlight the part of our vision statement that focuses on being “grounded in God’s word.” What is your favorite passage of scripture, and why? Share in a comment below and be entered to win a free drink from Chapters Books in Newberg!
Right now I really like "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." 2 Corinthians 12:9. It reminds me that God's grace is enough! Not just a part of the solution to my weakness, but completely sufficient. And that it is only through our weakness that God's power can be made perfect. It helps me turn situations where I feel helpless into exciting opportunities to see the power of God. I've tried to commit this to memory and repeat it often, especially during trying times.
ReplyDeleteRomans 8:31b: "If God is for us, who can be against us?" -- A favorite since I was in high school. I like all of chapter 8... especially the long list of all the scary things that cannot separate us from God.
ReplyDeleteI also really like the Magnificat (Mary's prayer at the beginning of Luke), in terms of both content and what it models (willingness to joyfully accept God's will... even if it seems really crazy!).
Oops. I realized I didn't really give the "why" re: Romans. I value the implication that God is always with me, not in the human sense of "winning" but in the larger, more important sense that nothing here on Earth can ever overcome God's love.
DeleteMy favorite passage is Luke 18:1 "And he told them a parable, to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart." This is my favorite because by Grandma Ruede gave me a little Gideons New Testament Bible, that originally belonged to my mom, with this passage marked especially for me. Grandma saw that I was very shy and must have thought this passage would help. She was right. Grandma taught my mom to pray and my mom taught me. When I pray I feel close to God's heart and that helps me not to lose heart when I'm feeling stressed, tired or just plain shy again. Some days I feel I'm in a constant state of prayer for all kinds of people and situations. Prayer gives a sense of hope and where there is hope, there is life and love and God.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting how those little Gideons Bibles get around. On the inside of the cover Grandma wrote, " To Windi from Grandma. Luke 18. Thanks for the use of your book. God Bless you all, Grandma Ruede mark for reading." Grandma had Alzheimer and mom found "her" bible, with the little directive to give to me, among grandma's things.
Thanks Grandma.
Congratulations to ALL of you -- your next drink at Chapters is on me. I will try to touch bases with Windi and Laura on Sunday. Andrea, I'll buy your coffee anytime! ;-)
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing -- I love these passages but especially the meaning you find in them. A long-time favorite of mine has been Colossians 3:12-17 (which is rumored to be this Sunday's second lesson...). I love this passage because it embodies love, grace, and thankfulness and commands us to teach each other the fruits of God's word.
