“The earth is the Lord’s and everything
in it.” –Psalm 24:1 (NLT)
Ask Jim Hagen, pastor of the ELCA’s
Elim Lutheran Church in Duluth, MN, why his congregation decided to go green,
and he’ll have a one word answer: “Costs.”
Over the past six years Elim has made
changes to their boilers, roof, and lights, but Jim will admit that saving the
planet wasn’t their primary goal. “We
did it because it’s a way for us to manage costs. It’s good stewardship of our finances.”
The changes they implemented were so
effective that Elim was one of four ELCA congregations recognized in 2012 by
the Energy Star energy efficiency program for congregations.
Elim Lutheran Church is able to be
good stewards of the environment and their finances. “In the winter time we’ve reduced our heat
bill. It’s half of what it was before.”
Give thanks to God for Elim’s
faithful stewardship.
