Tuesday, November 12 – A living wage

Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?'       –Matthew 20:15 (NRSV)
Do you remember Jesus’ parable “The Laborers in the Vineyard” in Matthew 20:1-15?  The landowner needs workers so he goes out at different times of the day, up until the last hour and gets workers to come pick the grapes.
At the end of the day they all receive their pay...and they all receive the same amount...the usual daily wage!
This parable is not a model for labor relations (or is it?), but about God’s generosity.  But how can we insure that workers are fairly compensated for their labor...& businesses can afford to hire them?
A proposal for raising the minimum wage from $7.25 to $10 is being pushed by many, including the President.  Elizabeth Warren figures that due to inflation and increased worker productivity, the minimum wage should be $22 an hour.  What’s fair?
Generous God, help us to see life through your eyes...and your heart.
