Because of this many of his disciples turned back and
no longer went about with him. 67 So Jesus asked the twelve,
"Do you also wish to go away?" 68 Simon Peter answered
him, "Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. –John 6:66-68 (NRSV)
Sometimes the word of God is challenging and not
comforting. Such is the case with
Jesus’ teaching here. For us, on
this side of it, it’s not that bad because we’re eating bread and drinking
wine, but for them, the obvious connection to cannibalism and Jesus’ repetition
of ‘eating flesh’ & ‘drinking blood’ is a bit gruesome. God sometimes ‘grosses us out’ to get
our attention...and teach us a truth that is still a mystery...
Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. Get my attention...and help me to
understand your ways...and your truth.
